A blog can be very valuable for your website for marketing. Two major characteristics of a blog most help the marcom effort: Speed and Interaction.
Speed: The ability to publish information within a couple of minutes means you can spread your messages with ease. This also can be dangerous if the message is not carefully reviewed beofre posting, so use with caution.
Interaction: Getting comments is not just valuable feedback to examine, but also means that you are creating a conversation about your message. The blogosphere is full of people who like to interact -- create a good blog and they will respond.

There are lots of advantages for having a corporate blog. I used to read Debbie Weils' "Corporate Blogging" and Jeremy Wrights's "Blog Marketing".
Those books mentioned that blogs will increase communication, relationship, speed, scale and interaction with the blogosphere. There is a company named Kryptonite (or something) who manufactured bicycle lock. The company lose millions of dollars because they ignore the rumors about their lock in the blogosphere. It went on to the TV and many distributors requested them to refund or change their stocks.
Company which has blog will have an increase in visitors, customers and customer spends more too.
I am new at participating in blogging - I have observed them several years. Now that I have "jumped in" by starting a blog and making a couple of posts to it, I need to figure out how to promote it. Thanks for your tips here.
